DIY Photography Light Box |
In this blog post, you will learn how to make your own inexpensive lightbox for your product photographs.
Quality photographs are an important part of selling online, it is most times the determining factor on whether or not a customer makes a purchase from your shop.
So, let's get into it...
Materials you will need:
- 1 sheet of White Foam Board - choose a size that is suitable for your needs (I used a 20"x 30")
- 1 sheet of White Paper or wrinkle-free fabric ( I used 11"x 30" paper)
- 1 Roll of Tape ( whatever type you have handy)
- 1 roll of Aluminium foil
- 2 desk lamps with clips
- 1 craft knife
- 1 ruler
- 1 pencil
How to make the ultimate photography lightbox.
Stage 1
I Measured 7" from each side of my foam board and used my pencil to draw a cut line.
I then used the craft knife to score along the line.
Do not cut all the way through the foam board.
Just score it enough so that it will bend with ease.

Stage 2
Use the straight edge of a table to bend the foam, then tape along the fold to make it firm.

Stage 3
Fold the sheet of white paper at one short edge about 2".
Then hook the paper over the top edge of the foam board to create a seamless backdrop.
Use a piece of tape to secure the foam box to the table.
|
Fold white paper to hang on the lightbox |
Stage 4
Cut out a sizable piece of aluminium foil to place over the top of the foam box.

Stage 5
Affix the 2 led lamps to the edge of the table and focus the light up towards the foil cover. This diffuses the light to create softer shadows.

Finished photoshoot set-up |
Play around with the angle of the light until you get the right results you are looking for.
Take your product photographs in natural light.
|
Outdoor Photoshoot. |
If you prefer to take your product pictures outdoors, then remove the Aluminium foil from the top of the lightbox and shoot your pictures when it is overcast outside.
Other options
Use 2 large foam boards and place them on a chair, one against the back of the chair and the other on the seat.
Position the chair a few feet from a window and take your pictures.
If there is too much sunlight coming through that window place a sheer white curtain on the window to diffuse the light.
This is a quick and easy DIY anyone can do it.
I promise you that you will see a great improvement in the quality of your product photographs.
