Are you looking for a quick and practical sewing project that's both functional and stylish? Today I'm excited to share how to make an adorable phone clutch wristlet using a free pattern from Emmaline Bags. This compact clutch is perfect for carrying your phone and a few essentials when you don't want to bring your full purse.

Materials You'll Need:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Creating the Strap and Zipper Ends:

  1. Start by cutting a 2" x 6" piece of fabric.
  2. Fold it lengthwise and press.
  3. Open and fold the long edges toward the center crease.
  4. Fold in half again and press.
  5. From this prepared strip, cut four 1-inch pieces (for zipper ends) and one 2-inch piece (for the strap tab).

Preparing the Zippers:

  1. Make sure your two 7-inch zippers have straight-cut edges.
  2. Attach the zipper ends to both zippers.
  3. Sew across the ends to secure them.

Making the D-Ring Tab:

  1. Take the 2-inch strap tab piece.
  2. Sew around all four edges.
  3. Thread it through the D-ring.
  4. Stitch across the short edge to secure.

Creating the Small Pocket:

  1. Find the center of one zipper and one pocket lining piece.
  2. Align the top edges.
  3. Place one exterior pocket piece over the zipper and lining, creating a sandwich.
  4. Clip or pin in place.
  5. Stitch across the top edge.
  6. Pull the exterior and lining pieces away from the zipper (wrong sides together).
  7. Topstitch close to the zipper using a 1/8" seam allowance.
  8. Press your stitches to set them.

Completing the Small Pocket:

  1. Place a second lining piece right side up.
  2. Place the zipper piece you just sewed (right side up) over this, aligning the top edge.
  3. Place the top exterior piece right side down.
  4. Clip and stitch in place.
  5. Topstitch close to the zipper.
  6. Align the bottom curved edges of all three layers (this will require bending the zipper slightly).
  7. Baste around the curve to secure all layers.

Attaching the D-Ring Tab:

  1. Mark 5/8" down from the top left side edge of your exterior pocket piece.
  2. Place the D-ring tab in that position, facing inward.
  3. Baste in place.

Creating the Main Pocket:

  1. Place one large lining piece (folded).
  2. Place your zipper right side up with the zipper pull to the left.
  3. Place one exterior piece right side down to create a sandwich.
  4. Sew across the top edge.
  5. Pull the lining and exterior wrong sides together, away from the zipper.
  6. Topstitch close to the zipper.

Assembling the Clutch:

  1. Place the second main pocket lining right side up.
  2. Place the small pocket section right side down over it.
  3. Sew across to attach them.
  4. Open the main pocket zipper halfway (very important for turning later!).
  5. Mark a 4-inch opening on the curved bottom of the lining piece (for turning).
  6. Place lining pieces right sides together and clip.
  7. Place exterior pieces right sides together and clip.
  8. Baste across the opening.
  9. Sew around the entire bag using a 1/4" seam allowance.
  10. Make sure the D-ring tab is tucked inside before sewing.

Finishing:

  1. Pull your bag through the opening to turn it right side out.
  2. Sew the opening closed.
  3. Stuff the lining back into your bag.
  4. Add your wristlet strap to the D-ring, and you're finished!
