handmade vintage
The Mabel

This is a retro-style bag that is quite stylish but can also be used as a lunch or cosmetic bag.

It can be made from a wide array of fabrics, but today I'm going to be using Vinyl and Quilting cotton.

This is a FREE pattern that is available for download on the Swoon Patterns website, So go there to get your copy and then come back and let's put this cutie together.

If you are a visual learner I will be posting a video tutorial on my Youtube channel called SewlyJo

Let's Begin.

First, print the pattern and cut it out, Then Add interfacing according to instructions. Pellon shape flex and Peltex were recommended. I chose to use Peltex and Fleece.

Mabel Gusset and Flap

gusset prep
Sew the Exterior and lining gusset
by placing the pattern pieces right sides together
and stitch using a 1/2" seam allowance

bagmaking for beginners
If you are using vinyl finger press the seam open
and stitch on both sides of the seam about 1/4"
For the lining use an iron

Install the magnetic snap closure to the flap and main body of the bag,
This process will be shown in detail in the video tutorial on
my channel SewlyJo

After installing the magnetic snap closure on the
lining flap place the 2 flap pieces right sides together
and stitch around the curve using a 1/2" SA.
Turn right sides at the top edge and topstitch all around the
flap using a 1/4" SA and a Long stitch length.
