How to Make an Adjustable vinyl Handbag Shoulder Strap and Connectors

Length of strap


The length of an Adjustable bag strap/crossbody strap ranges between 28" to 65".
Although a 55" strap is more commonly used because of its ease of adjustment to suit your preferences

Width of Strap

  1. Drawcord  straps - 3/8"
  2. Slender -1/2"
  3. Standard - 3/4"
  4. Classic - 1"
  5. Wide - 1-1/2"
  6. Extra-wide - 2"
  7. Chain - 1/4"- 5/8"
Nylon or cotton webbing can also be used to make an adjustable cross-body strap.
They are sold by the yard and is the easiest method to make your bag strap.

So let's get on with the tutorial...

For this tutorial, we are going to make a 3/4" wide strap and connectors from vinyl.

Measurements and Hardware

Vinyl strip 42" x 1-1/2" (cut 1)
Connector tabs 4" x 1-1/2" (cut 2)
2 D-rings 3/4"
2 Swivel Hooks 3/4"
1 Slide 3/4"

Fold your vinyl strip in half lengthwise to find the middle
Open and lay your strip wrong side up
Fold both the raw edges inwards meeting at the middle 

Use fabric glue or clips to hold the fabric in place.
Stitch along the folded edges using 1/8" seam allowance.
Repeat for the D-ring connectors/tabs

Installation of the hardware


vinyl strap
Add a swivel hook to one end of the strap,
fold over about 2" and stitch in place

Add the slider and second swivel hook to the other end of the strap

Thread the strap under and then over the slider bar
as shown in the image above

Take the strap to your sewing machine and stitch to secure

Add D-rings, fold over and stitch the raw ends

Congratulations!! you did it

Your beautifully handmade adjustable shoulder strap and d-ring tabs 
are ready to be added in the construction of your next bag project.
