Today we are going to discuss the Fabrics, Interfacing and Bag Patterns.

Fabrics, Interfacing/Stabilizers and bag Patterns

Fabrics

Types:

  • Quilting cotton
  • Home Decor fabrics
  • Wool
  • Velvet
  • Corduroy
  • Satin
  • Leather/faux leather/Vinyl
  • Cork
  • Oil Cloth
  • Denim
  • Canvas
Choose your fabrics to suit the purpose of the types of bag you intend to make.
Example: Use denim/leather to make bags for men, this material can take regular wear.
Canvas for backpacks because this material is very durable and is sometimes waterproof. Simply great for outdoor activities.

Interfacings/Stabilizers
These are adhered to fabric to create structure and firmness.
This material comes in different thickness and textures or colours and can be found at your local fabric stores. Sold by the yard or bolt.

Types

  1. Sew -In stabilizers such as Fleece and Batting
  2. Iron on - adhesive on one side or both sides
Firmness - Heavy, Medium and lightweight

Bag Patterns
Patterns are templates used to cut out the fabric pieces needed to construct a particular bag.
These can be Paper, Card stock or Plastic canvas or digital print.
Most bag pattern designers provide a free pattern as well as paid.
So, before you purchase a pattern I would recommend that you try a free pattern first to make sure that the pattern by this specific designer is well written and easy to for you to understand.
