How To Sew a RECESSED Zipper - Bag with Gusset

Watch the video tutorial below.

A recessed zipper adds a professional touch to any handmade bag, creating that coveted high-end look while providing secure closure. In this tutorial, I'll walk you through the process of installing a recessed zipper in a gusseted bag, breaking down each step to ensure success even if you're new to this technique.

 Materials Needed

- Main fabric pieces (bag front, back, and gusset)
- Zipper (longer than your desired opening)
- Two zipper facing strips
- Two zipper tabs
- Interfacing (if using)
- Basic sewing supplies (machine, scissors, pins, etc.)

 Preparation

Before we begin, ensure all your pieces are cut to size:
- Zipper facing strips: Cut two pieces 2" wide by the length of your zipper opening plus 1"
- Zipper tabs: Cut two pieces 2" x 3"
- Interface your fabric pieces if desired for additional structure

 Step-by-Step Instructions

 1. Prepare Your Zipper

First, we'll create a clean, professional finish for your zipper ends:

1. Press your zipper tabs in half lengthwise, wrong sides together
2. Open the fold and press each long edge toward the center crease
3. Fold in half again along the original crease to create binding
4. Place one tab over each end of the zipper, centering the zipper between the folds
5. Stitch across each tab close to the zipper teeth
6. Trim excess zipper length, leaving about 1/4" beyond the tabs

 2. Attach Zipper Facings

1. Place one zipper facing strip right side up
2. Position your prepared zipper face down along the long edge, centering it
3. Place the second facing strip right side down, sandwiching the zipper
4. Pin everything in place
5. Stitch 1/4" from the edge through all layers
6. Press both facing strips away from the zipper
7. Topstitch 1/8" from the seam on both sides of the zipper

 3. Integrate with Bag Front

1. Mark the zipper opening on your bag front piece
2. Position the zipper unit behind the opening, centering it
3. Pin in place, ensuring the zipper teeth are visible through the opening
4. Stitch around the opening 1/4" from the edge
5. Carefully cut through the center of the opening, making diagonal cuts to the corners
6. Turn the zipper unit to the wrong side through the opening
7. Press the edges crisp, ensuring no puckers
8. Topstitch around the opening 1/8" from the edge

 4. Connect to Gusset

1. Align the gusset with the top edge of your bag front
2. Pin right sides together, matching any pattern or markings
3. Sew with a 1/2" seam allowance
4. Press the seam toward the gusset
5. Repeat for the bag back

 Pro Tips

- Always test your zipper before proceeding to the next step
- Use a zipper foot for cleaner stitching near the zipper teeth
- Grade your seams to reduce bulk in corners
- Consider using wonder clips instead of pins for thick layers
- Steam press each step for professional results

 Troubleshooting Common Issues

 Zipper Won't Lay Flat

If your zipper is wavy or puckered, try:
- Using more pins during installation
- Pressing with steam between steps
- Adjusting your presser foot pressure
- Ensuring facing strips aren't stretched during sewing

 Corners Not Sharp

For crisp corners:
- Make sure diagonal cuts reach but don't exceed the stitching line
- Use a point turner to push out corners
- Press thoroughly before topstitching

 Final Notes

Take your time with each step, especially when cutting the zipper opening and securing the corners. A well-installed recessed zipper not only looks professional but also functions better and lasts longer. Remember that practice makes perfect, if your first attempt isn't flawless, know that each project will improve your technique.

This construction method creates a beautifully finished opening that's both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The recessed design protects the zipper and creates a clean line across your bag, elevating the overall appearance of your handmade creation.
